Pale Man (Blog #5)
Setting & Props: In the Pale Man's layer there is a huge table with a voluptuous feast. Not only was there a lot of food, but the food itself was big and full. This delicious looking food was created for temptation. When food looks appealing you want to try it. The curiosity kicks in and you want to taste it, you want to know what it taste like. So when Ofelia was leaving her curiosity took the best of her and she ate two juicy grapes. Her eating just one grape made the Pale Man awake from his slumber. On the table in front of the Pale Man are his eyes, deep red, on a tarnished brass platter. This gives the audience and Ofelia a feeling of false hope that he is dead or cannot see. Behind the table was a crackling fireplace, this is what lights the majority of the room. The ceiling had paintings of the Pale Man's past. One had him holding a child by the foot and a sword through the child's belly. Another one is him eating a child. After Ofelia sees the paintings of what he can do, she turns around and sees a mound of children's shoes. This adds to the legend of the Pale Man and how he has killed hundreds of children. Next she came across three little door locks. Each had a different design and the fairies pointed to the second door which was bronzeish with lighter brass "knots". But Ofelia did not pick that one, she picked the one that older brown with two iron bars across horizontally. She used a key that was all bent out of shape and was an old style key. The key was long, kind of like a golden stick. She used this key to open the farthest left door and inside was a beautiful new tear shaped dagger that was wrapped in a red velvet fabric. The hilt of the dagger was engraved and gold, while the blade was silvery and shiny. The cleanliness of the blade means that it has been locked up for quite a while and no one has used it for some time. Just as the blade hadn't been used in a while the corridor itself had not been walked in a while. The walls were stone so some dust formed on the checkard floors. This made his layer look old, old as time. Speaking of time Ofelia used an hour glass to get into his realm this hour glass had a curvy black holder with branch like appendages holding the glass in place. But the hour glass was did not cross the threshold it was on the other side in her room. The hour glass was "holding" the stone wall she had drawn out, but the time ran out and closed the door, so Ofelia had to draw another one on the ceiling of the hallway. In order to do this she was stepping on the worn out green wooden chair to stand on. It looked as if it would break, and she would fall out from under it, this created suspense; not knowing if it would support her and let her escape.
Lighting: There are a mix of lightings used in this scene. In the large room with the table; the fireplace was the main source of light, this is a more natural lighting. There is more natural lighting in the room and this is made by the holes in the ceiling allowing the light to come through. By using the natural lighting this creates key lighting by having some areas lighter than others, the table for example was all illuminated you could see all of the table and the metals on top even shined. The next key light was placed by the three locks, this was to also show all of it equally. The hallway leading back to the girls room was a bit darker than the "dining" room, because it had less openings where light was coming through. The hallway had windows that light was shining through. This darkness was to create a darker, scarier mood. Since the Pale Man was chasing her through this hallway it made the chase more intense than if it were light. The last lighting spot would be Ofelia's room, this had almost no light, besides what had come from the moon. In her world it was nighttime and the only source of light is the moon.
Costume & Make-up: I have to applaud the make-up and costume designers. Kudos. The Pale Man was all a prosthetic make-up. This means that artist sculpted and molded the look for the Pale Man, and I am impressed by the result. They really captured the gruesomeness in a supernatural feel. Obviously the Pale Man is not anything found on earth, but he does look like it would come out of someones imagination. Not just imagination but something of nightmare. His body was baggy with nasty white dry skin, but his body was also literally skin and bones. He had many folds, like a fat person went anorexic. His face was probably the smoothest part of his body and it had two nostril like openings about where eyes would go. The fact that the monster had no eyes on its face really added to the eeriness. And when he put his eyes in his hands, it gave me the chills. It reminded me of something I have seen before but I couldn't put my finger on it and that scared me more. To add to his hellish look his hands were that pale, pinkish red like his body, but had finger length black nails. Next is Ofelia's dress, it is sort of like an Alice dress. It's a jean color blue, very conservative with buttons. This is to create the look of innocence.
Sound: There are two types of sound; diegetic and non-diegetic, plain and simple it means sounds on screen versus the sounds made off screen. Let's start from the beginning of the scene. As soon as the scene starts you can hear the crackle of the fire behind the table. The sound of the fire makes the dining room feel more like a regular home. It's a soothing sound so if you were in that room you would feel at ease. When Ofelia looks at the mural on the ceiling you can hear screams from children (non-diegetic). The screaming of the children really emphasizes that the Pale Man is a children killer, and since Ofelia is a child she could be in grave danger. Ofelia goes to the three doors and the fairies are flying around and talking. They make bug noises, like the wings when the fairies fly. Also when the fairies talk they are clicking and peeping noises (even though the fairies are on screen they are green screened so the sounds are voice over type which is non-diegetic). The fairies were pointing and making their noises at the door they thought she should open, but she said no out loud. She brought out the key and it made a sword drawing out sound (non-diegetic). I really like the noise that the lock made when she was turning it, because you could hear the gears turning making the clunking noise. She opened the little door and stuck her hand in, she was struggling a little so she started grunting to reach in and grab the thing inside. When she uncovered the dagger it made a shine ding noise. As she was about to leave she passed the table with the feast again and something clicked in the back of her mind and sparkly noise sounded (non-diegetic) and she turned to eat the grape. This awakened the Pale Man and ominous scary music started to play. The Dun Dun noise in scary movies happened when his fingers began to move. Then you hear a gasp of air coming from the monster as it comes to. That noise was pretty gross to me, because it ensured that you knew it was alive and that it was going to get her. She didn't know for a while what was going on behind her and then the fairies attacked it. Two fairies heads were chewed off they made screeching noises and their heads made the tearing and breaking of bones noise. It sounded like the monster chewed with its mouth open, you could hear the crunching and slurping of blood. More music was playing when he was chasing her, while the chase was going on he was making screech type high pitched noise, and she was panting from running. She started screaming NOOOO when the door closed. She tried to draw another one but the chalk snapped. Then she was struggling to draw it on the ceiling and the chair underneath her was wobbling.
Behavior of Figures: I really like all of the camera angles it emphasizes the important part, and also created intense emotions. Since there are so many ways to describe camera angle; frame, length, angle, and motion. I will describe the three parts. First part with the entrance; the camera pans closely across the table then goes to a shot of her medium slow pan as she walks across them. Then it stops and focuses on the eyes on the platter. It's a wider shot to get her and the Pale Man. Second part is Ofelia at the 3 doors. Before she gets there it's a wide far shot to show all 3 doors. The fairies go up close to them and it focuses on the second door, then it switches to Ofelia and then her pocket to close up on the key. This shot is a close up of her face with the key about face level. Then the camera follows her to the lock, then she backs up and she then chooses the first door. The camera is first person watching her twist the key into the lock. Then once the door is open it is from the view inside the door to see her reaching in. Then once she has the dagger and unveils it the perspective is back to first person. The first person was so that you saw exactly what she saw. The last part I will be describing is the chase scene. This is after the Pale Man ate the fairies. The camera does a wide pan of her running back to the door, then does a straight on view from her bedroom while the door is closing, it switches to first person. Then goes to the monster medium panning. When Ofelia uses the chair it focuses at her feet, then it goes to the monsters feet. It does this twice. Then it goes to a view where you Ofelia is in focus and you can see the Pale Man in the background but he is out of focus. This allows the audience to be the omniscient figure.
Lighting: There are a mix of lightings used in this scene. In the large room with the table; the fireplace was the main source of light, this is a more natural lighting. Amusing Ourselves to Death (Blog #3)
The advancements in technology have changed many aspects of our culture. Some people believe, "But technology itself is neutral. It's a tool, neither good nor evil. " (Times). Other people believe that there are good effects and negative effects to technology. I agree that technology is neutral, and is a tool. And technically is not "good" nor evil. BUT there are definently two sides to the effects of technology. One mentioned by Huxley, "Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us." (Postman). To a certain extent I do agree that what we love; social media, TV's, computers, etc. will probably ruin us. As some say it is already starting to ruin us.
Times Magazine has a different perspective of the quickly changing culture then what you would think. Times Magazine states, "There's a lesson in that for all of us in the media, for we must adapt to new technology, and not simply by putting the same old wine in new bottles. We need to adapt by creating our content in a way that is organic to those new mediums." They believe that things like Twitter and Facebook are a gateway to a new form of communication. Communication evolves, it changes throughout the years, with every advancement in technology, we change how we connect. Think about it... the telephone (we can call, text, even video chat) and the internet (e-mails, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
But social media is not the only way technology has changed our culture. Technology has improved how we as humans live. As Buzzle says, "It is almost impossible to enlist all the positive effects of technology on society. The fast-advancing technology on the whole, has given impetus to developments in various fields and improved the quality of human life. There's less risk, less effort, less mess. There's more leisure, more ease and more speed - all because of that ten-letter word - not a word, a phenomenon - technology." There are literally so many good things that have come with technology. The ones that come to mind for me are medical technologies. We have been able to save more peoples lives with technology in the field of medicine. For example the pacemaker; this device is placed on someones heart who cannot start itself. Without the pacemaker many people who suffer heart diseases would die.
On the other hand having advancements in technology causes some problems. Info Tech states that technology causes 5 main problems: depletion of natural resources, pollution, extinction, health, massive destruction. Most people do not care for the effects of their technology, because they believe that they are better than the environment, or animals/plants. But to be honest those people couldn't be more wrong. We live with the animals and plants, we are all equal, not one species is above another. Well, that's what I believe anyway. And I believe that people should care more about what is going on around them instead of worrying about their battery dying on their "precious" iPhone. People can be so ignorant.
So yes, I definitely agree with Postman. We will amuse ourselves to death because with our technology comes huge negative effects that will most likely be our demise. Maybe not to the extent of what Huxley proposed, but what kills the humans will probably be what we love. And right now what we love is our technologies.

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms.
I would consider myself to be media literate, because I can access, and create many forms of media. I have a Facebook, a Twitter. I use Pandora and Youtube all the time. Google as my mom says is your BEST FRIEND. I wouldn't call myself tech savy, but I at least no how to work my way around many things found on the computers about media.

Design (Blog #2)
Though I may have dark thoughts, I would like to drown those out with a happy blog! I read a couple articles on how to create a blog *anything really* with a light and happy look.
First let's start with the typography. Codrops states that to establish a lighter mood, the typefaces should have curvy, loose styles. This makes the text seem more fun! Also Codrops adds that if you use script or cursive the text is more feminine as well as a light mood. So since I am a girl, using these curvy script typefaces seems fitting. As well as appearing feminine I automatically add a playful mood. My posts though will have a neutral feeling to them, since I use Helvatica or Arial. Codrops says that those two fonts are "moodless", which is fine because I do not want them to be distracting. I want my posts to be easy to read. With Arial and Helvatica my posts will be able to get my point across without looking too formal or overwhelming.
I have chose this background to create calmness and good mood. The main colors of my background are blue and green. According to color psychology the color green is restful, cheerful, and soothing. The color blue relates to the feeling of calmness and serenity. You don't want to be reading someones blog, and feel angered or anxious. So, to allow my readers some peace I chose my background to emanate the feeling of calmness. Another color I chose to incorporate is pink, there is not a lot of pink in my blog, but enough to do its job. Pink is said to have the same effect as with the colors blue and green to create a feeling of calmness. If you don't believe that, well some real life examples are sports teams painting the opposing teams lockers pink; so that they are more passive and less energetic.
I hope you enjoy my blog. I believe it is very pleasing to look at. It might change later, but for now it is the calming scene of a dandelion being blown in the wind, and some girly fonts :)

Who Am I Really? (Blog #1)
To answer the question of who am I? Well, my name is Arden Jacobs. I am a senior at Mason High School. After graduation, in May, I will be attending college. I got accepted to the University of Cincinnati in to the McMickon College of Arts and Sciences for Neuroscience, in December 2012. I want to become a neurologist. I love learning about things, especially about the brain. That and I have always wanted to become a doctor. So yes, I will be going to school for about 8 years. I realize that is a long time, but I think it will be totally worth it! I want to be that person to cure Alzheimer's or schizophrenia.
I'm going to be honest, I have done almost no volunteering, but I do have a job. I have worked at Cedar Village Retirement for over a year now. I work in dietary as a server. I have trained at least 4 people since I have been there. This proves that I am a good, hard worker. Not only that, but I am reliable, trustworthy, intelligent, nice, and very shy. When I went into my interview for my job, I got super embarrassed because I am socially awkward and those situations make me feel uncomfortable. But she excused my awkwardness because she could see that behind my awkwardness I was a good, young person.
My parents got a divorce freshman year. This was probably the worst time for them to do this. I believe high school is where a person really becomes who they are supposed to. This is the time their brain (a teenagers) finishes developing the personality part. So, when they became separated this severely effected me. I started to become more distant, because now I don't really like being around a lot of people. It is also really hard for me to trust people. Not just my parents fault, past relationships have also had there part on harming my life. But out of all the pain I have gone through in the past 4 years, I have found a couple great people! Without them, I honestly do not know where I'd be. They are my best friends, and they have helped me become a stronger more independent person. If they happen to read this, I hope you know that I greatly appreciate your help, and I love you dearly ♥.
Even though this is not all of me, people still need that element of mystery. So, if you would like to know more, you know where to find me :) I am *though I don't really like people, I feel the need to help no matter what* always open.
♥ Ardy :)
